Today we are going to continue to discuss the story by O’ Henry “The last leaf”. Now you read the story till the end. And if you remember when we discussed the author’s life story some of you told that O’ Henry is a master of surprising endings! At the end of the lesson you will tell me if he is really so…

- So did you like the ending of the story in general?

Let’s see how you remember some facts from the story. Your task is to say if the following statements are true or false:

- Johnsy said she didn't want to die.

-"When the last leaf falls, I shall die," Johnsy said.

-Behrman was a young painter.

-The last leaf did not fall down.

-Johnsy did not feel better.

-People found Behrman in the yard.

- It wasn't a real leaf on the ivy vine, it was a picture.

So you got the details! That’s great!

Now we are going to see how well you remember some word combinations from the

text, because we will need them during the lesson. Do you see these 2 columns of words on the blackboard? Your task is to match the words so as to get word combinations. Please, be very attentive while listening your classmates because then you will make up your own sentences with these word combinations:

to laugh to the window

to count leaves

to look out down

to come up at the window

Now I will give you cards. There are some statements in them. They are in a mess. Your task is to put the statements in the right order according to the story so you will get the plan of it. The plan will help you to refresh the story in your mind because you are going to answer the questions you have prepared at home!

Now ask your questions but, please, follow the plan! Your classmates will answer.

Now let’s find the saddest and the happiest moments of the story…

Johnsy is described very differently in these 2 parts of the story, isn’t she?

How can we understand it? What makes you think so?

Yes, she even speaks in different ways.

How does she speak? Yes, you are right, in the first part of the story she speaks in a negative, pessimistic way, and in the second – in the optimistic one!

Find the examples in the text of the pessimistic and optimistic way of Johnsy’s speech.

Now look at the blackboard. You can see some special word combinations. Let’s read them because we are going to use them in our speech! They will help you to sound seriously and at the same time polite while expressing your point of view!

And now let’s try to read our columns using these word combinations!

Children, now we will play a bit, let’s divide into 2 groups: group #1 is going to speak in a pessimistic way and group #2 will try to change the mind of group #1. Add your own examples to prove your point of view…

So we will play in the following way: you give arguments one by one and the group that gives more arguments will win

( задача учителя – вывести ситуацию так, чтобы выиграли «оптимисты», но без проигравших. «Пессимисты» не проигрывают, а сознательно меняют свою точку зрения).

Children, are you satisfied with our results? I like the conclusion to which you’ve come all together!

Now tell me, do you remember we talked about heavy diseases before reading the story? So can you tell me now what an ill person need most of all in order to recover? Why?

Yes, you are all right. This person needs a strong belief in his recovering, desire to recover!

And the last special question for you: do you think Behrman managed to become a good painter? Why?

- And now let’s have some fun! As you remember you created your own endings of the story at our previous lesson. I made some notes. And I can remind you what they were like…

Now you know the real ending of the story so we can vote for the best variants. We have 2 nominations: ”the closest to the real one variant” and ”the most exciting variant”.

But which is the best ending?

Yes, sure the best variant is the original one! But were you surprised by this end? So can you agree that O’ Henry is a master of surprising endings? Would you like to read another story by this author? Would you like to read it in English or translated? Why?

So, the winners, you have the right to choose our next story for home reading!

Your home task for tomorrow will be to write a letter to Johnsy. And in this letter you should do your best to make Johnsy change her mind. Use the tables we’ve made all together! It will be a letter from a stranger and you may design it in any way you wish.
